Group A
For starters, the FIFA World Cup in Russia should have happened eight years ago when the russian team was at its peak, with players like Andrei Arshavin, Roman Pavlyuchenko and others, reached the semi-finals of Euro 2008.Russian team before the first leg against Slovenia in 14 11 2009. |
Going back to the present, I believe that Russia don't have many chances to move to the round of 16, because in addition to having better teams in the group, the generation of players gives no reason for hope for the russian fans.
Another country that the fans will probably have no reason to celebrate is Saudi Arabia, who after qualifying directly in the Asian tie, missed the 2010 FIFA World Cup runner-up Bert van Marwijk, and from that point on the team's performance fell impressively.
To get an idea of the former Chilean coach, Argentina's Juan Antonio Pizzi has been a Saudi coach for some games, and has also stepped down from the helm.
So my favorites for Group A are Uruguay first and Egypt second.
Prognosis:
In the Russia debut they will win their only game in the Cup against Saudi Arabia (2x0), and will miss the other two matches. The Saudis will return home the same way they arrived, with none points.
The clash between Egypt and Uruguay will be the most disputed of group A, but the uruguayans will win 2-1 with goals from Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani. Note: Due to injury suffered in the UEFA Champions League Final, egyptian striker Mohamed Salah will only make his second round debut against Russia.
1. Uruguay 9 pts, 2. Egypt 6 pts, 3. Russia 3 pts, Saudi Arabia 0 pts.
